What changed
The Minister of Finance has formally directed the Canadian International Trade Tribunal to conduct a safeguard inquiry covering solid and engineered wood cabinets and vanities, solid and engineered hardwood flooring, and engineered wood storage furniture. This follows a formal request from the Canadian Wood Products Alliance and gives the Tribunal 270 days to assess whether increased imports are causing or threatening serious injury to Canadian producers.
Importers and foreign manufacturers of these wood products should monitor this process closely. If the Tribunal finds that safeguard measures are warranted, the government has committed to taking appropriate action, which could include tariffs or other trade remedies consistent with international trade rules. Canadian wood product buyers and construction firms using these inputs should also track developments for potential cost impacts.
