DOJ Extends State, Local Government Digital Accessibility Deadlines by One Year
Summary
The Department of Justice extended compliance deadlines for the 2024 ADA Title II digital accessibility rule, which requires state and local governments to make web content and mobile apps accessible under WCAG 2.1 Level AA. Governments with populations over 50,000 now have until April 26, 2026 to comply, while governments with smaller populations or special districts have until April 26, 2028. The article notes that while Title III regulations for private businesses such as banks are not yet in force, similar requirements may follow.
“It pushes back the compliance date for government entities with a population of less than 50,000, or any special district government, from April 26, 2027, to April 26, 2028.”

What changed
The DOJ has pushed back the compliance dates for the 2024 rule implementing Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act, which sets web accessibility standards based on WCAG 2.1 Level AA. The extension grants an additional year to both compliance tiers: larger governments (over 50,000 population) and smaller governments or special districts.\n\nWhile the regulation directly affects only state and local government entities, the article signals that banks and other private businesses subject to Title III of the ADA should anticipate comparable requirements. Financial institutions currently reviewing their digital accessibility posture may use this extension period to assess web and mobile application accessibility against WCAG 2.1 standards in preparation for potential future obligations.

DOJ extends deadline for state, local government digital accessibility rule
April 22, 2026 Reading Time: 1 min read The Department of Justice this week extended by a year the compliance deadlines for a recent revision to the regulation implementing Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act, which establishes specific requirements for making state and local governments’ web content and mobile applications accessible.
In 2024, the DOJ finalized a rule to generally require state and local governments’ web content and mobile apps to comply with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA. The new extension pushes back the compliance date for government entities with a total population of more than 50,000 from April 24 of this year to April 26, 2026. It pushes back the compliance date for government entities with a population of less than 50,000, or any special district government, from April 26, 2027, to April 26, 2028.
While the regulations apply only to state and local governments subject to Title II, regulations applicable to private businesses subject to Title III, such as banks, may follow in similar form and substance.
