NASS Correction on Objective Yield Surveys Information Collection

Email

Summary

The National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) issued a correction to a notice regarding the revision and extension of its Objective Yield Surveys information collection. This notice corrects details in the Federal Register publication from January 14, 2026. Comments are due by March 16, 2026.

What changed

This notice serves as a correction to a previously published Federal Register document (FR Doc. No. 2026-00542) concerning the National Agricultural Statistics Service's (NASS) intention to revise and extend its approved information collection for Objective Yield Surveys. The correction specifically amends the Abstract section, clarifying NASS's primary objective to collect, prepare, and issue state and national estimates for crop and livestock production, prices, and disposition, as well as economic statistics and farm numbers. It also reiterates that the Objective Yield Surveys predict yields for corn, soybeans, wheat, citrus, and nuts, with sample fields being randomly selected and measurements taken during the growing season.

Regulated entities, specifically agricultural firms involved with the surveyed crops, should note this correction for accurate understanding of the information collection's scope and purpose. While this is a correction to a notice, the original notice announced the intention to request revision and extension of an existing collection. The comment deadline for this notice is March 16, 2026, and comments should be submitted to NASS via email, eFax, mail, or hand delivery, referencing docket number 0535-0088.

What to do next

  1. Review the corrected abstract for the Objective Yield Surveys information collection.
  2. Submit comments by March 16, 2026, referencing docket number 0535-0088.

SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION:

Correction

In the
Federal Register
of January 14, 2026, in FR Doc. No. 2026-00542, on page 1501, correct the
SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION
captain, paragraph 1 and 2, under the Abstract section, to read:

Abstract: The primary objective of the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) is to collect, prepare and issue State and national
estimates of crop and livestock production, prices and disposition as well as economic statistics, farm numbers, land values,
on-farm pesticide usage, pest crop management practices, as well as the Census of Agriculture. The Objective Yield Surveys
objectively predict yields for corn, soybeans, wheat, citrus, and nuts. Sample fields are randomly selected for these crops,
plots are laid out, and periodic counts and measurements are taken and then used to forecast production during the growing
season. Production forecasts are published in USDA crop reports.

The fruit and nut objective yield surveys are conducted under cooperative agreements with several State Departments of Agriculture.
The individual States will be reimbursing NASS for the costs associated with these additional surveys.
