Pandemic Preparedness and Health Emergencies Research (FPE)
Summary
The Centre for Research on Pandemic Preparedness and Health Emergencies (CRPPHE) is housed at CIHR with a mandate to grow Canada's research leadership in preparedness, prevention, response, and recovery from pandemics and public health emergencies, including by building and supporting Canadian research capacity in the field.
CRPPHE will fund applications that address its mandate and that have a primary research objective related to preparing for and/or responding to existing and future pandemics and other health emergencies. In addition, applications must address one or more of the research areas listed below. CRPPHE encourages interdisciplinary applications including applications taking One Health, holistic or Indigenous approaches to research.
Research Areas:
- Behavioural sciences;
- Health Systems Research
- Intervention research and implementation science;
- One Health*;
- Community-based research approaches;
- Infectious disease modelling *For the purpose of this Priority Announcement:
A health emergency is defined as a present or imminent event or phenomenon, of a temporary, acute nature, with actual or potential significant negative impacts on human health, resulting in:
- A serious disruption of the functioning of a community; and/or,
- The declaration of a state of emergency by a municipal, provincial/territorial, federal and/or Indigenous government, or international organization with a health research mandate, and that;
- Requires prompt research action to protect and strengthen human health. One Health is defined as an integrated, unifying approach that aims to sustainably balance and optimize the health of people, animals and ecosystems. It recognizes that the health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants, and the wider environment (including ecosystems) are closely linked and interdependent. While health, food, water, energy and environment are all wider topics with sector-specific concerns, the collaboration across sectors and disciplines contributes to protect health, address health challenges such as the emergence of infectious diseases. By linking humans, animals and the environment, One Health can help to address the full spectrum of disease control – from prevention to detection, preparedness, response and management – and contribute to global health security.
For more information about it's mandate and objectives visit the CRPPHE website.

Review Process and Evaluation
Relevance Review Process
The following criteria will be used in conducting the relevance review:
- Alignment of the objectives of the proposed activity with the specific objectives of the CIHR Institute, Initiative, Branch and/or partners offering funding through the Priority Announcement Funding Opportunity. To conduct relevance review, CIHR and Partners will have access to various information submitted by applicants (e.g. completed relevance form, project titles, summaries), provided that applicants have consented to the sharing of information in consideration for other funding opportunities as well as to the sharing of information to observers in completing their ResearchNet application.
Funding Decision
Upon completion of peer review, CIHR will rank the applications that 1) are found to be relevant to the specific objectives of the research initiative and the research priority areas described under "CIHR Research Priority Areas"; and 2) are ranked within the CIHR fundable range but are not funded through the regular CIHR competition to which they were submitted. These applications will be funded from the top down in order of ranking as far as budgets will allow.
Applications that receive a ranking below the regular competition fundable range will not be funded.
Applications that are not deemed to be relevant will be withdrawn from the Priority Announcement competition, but will continue to be considered for funding through the Canada Postdoctoral Research Award (CPRA) program funding opportunity.
Peer Review
Peer review committees will not be informed of applications submitted for funding through priority announcements.
How to Apply
To submit an application, please log into ResearchNet and create an application through the "202509PTA" competition of the Canada Postdoctoral Research Award (CPRA) program funding opportunity.
