Priority Announcements on the Canada Graduate Research Scholarship - Doctoral competition offers additional sources of funding for highly rated applications that are relevant to specific CIHR research priority areas or mandates. CIHR IA will fund up to three doctoral applications related to Geroscience.
Specific RequirementsThis Priority Announcement will require the completion of a Relevance Form.
Applicants must clearly indicate in the Relevance Form the relevance of their proposal to the specific area of geroscience.
The award must be held in Canada.
CIHR-IA Institute team will contact the funded recipient to request a plain language written summary of their research project. This could include key messages and/or findings, outcomes, next steps and if applicable, any knowledge mobilization activities.
The NPA will be required to submit a final report within one (1) month following the end of the award. The template and instructions for this report will be provided by CIHR.
Bioinformatics and Computational Biology – (BCB)
Summary
- The CIHR Genomics Data & Capacity-Building Initiative, under the scientific leadership of the CIHR Institute of Genetics will provide funding for applications that can improve capacity in the field of Bioinformatics, Computational Biology and Health Data Science in genetics and genomics.

Research AreasApplications must focus on a project that advances the field of Bioinformatics, Computational Biology and Health Data Science in genetics and genomics.
Please note that projects focusing on the use of computational biology tools rather than their development will not be deemed eligible for this Priority Announcement.

Lung Health in Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit or Métis) populations – (DIA)

- The CIHR Institute of Indigenous Peoples' Health (IIPH) fosters the advancement of a national health research agenda to improve and promote the health of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples in Canada, through research, knowledge translation and capacity building. The Institute's pursuit of research excellence is enhanced by respect for community research priorities and Indigenous knowledges, values and cultures. - IIPH will contribute $180,000 and Lung Health Foundation will contribute $180,000.

The primary focus of the research must be on Indigenous people's health as it relates to one (or more) of the following: lung cancer, COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), Asthma, harm reduction activities (vaccines, commercial nicotine cessation, air quality improvement).
Applicants must ensure that their Relevance Form clearly addresses the alignment with IIPH's mandate and Lung Health Foundation 's mandate.
Representatives of the Lung Health Foundation may call on awardees to participate in educational activities to promote the benefits of research or for their collaboration in communication and promotion of not-for-profit marketing purposes. Priority Areas in Pandemic Preparedness and Health Emergencies Research – (DPG)
Summary
The Centre for Research on Pandemic Preparedness and Health Emergencies (CRPPHE) is housed at CIHR with a mandate to grow Canada's research leadership in preparedness, prevention, response, and recovery from pandemics and public health emergencies, including by building and supporting Canadian research capacity in the field. For more information about it's mandate and objectives visit the CRPPHE website.
CRPPHE will fund applications that address its mandate and that have a primary research objective related to preparing for and/or responding to existing and future pandemics and other health emergencies. In addition, applications must address one or more of the research areas listed below. CRPPHE encourages interdisciplinary applications including applications taking One Health, holistic or Indigenous approaches to research.

For the purpose of this Priority Announcement:
A health emergency is defined as a present or imminent event or phenomenon, of a temporary, acute nature, with actual or potential significant negative impacts on human health, resulting in:
- A serious disruption of the functioning of a community; and/or
- The declaration of a state of emergency by a municipal, provincial/territorial, federal and/or Indigenous government, or international organization with a health research mandate, and that;
- Requires prompt research action to protect and strengthen human health. One Health is defined as an integrated, unifying approach that aims to sustainably balance and optimize the health of people, animals and ecosystems. It recognizes that the health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants, and the wider environment (including ecosystems) are closely linked and interdependent. While health, food, water, energy and environment are all wider topics with sector-specific concerns, the collaboration across sectors and disciplines contributes to protect health, address health challenges such as the emergence of infectious diseases. By linking humans, animals and the environment, One Health can help to address the full spectrum of disease control – from prevention to detection, preparedness, response and management – and contribute to global health security.

Specific RequirementsThis Priority Announcement will require the completion of a Relevance Form. In the Relevance Form, applicants must clearly explain:
- how their application addresses the CRPPHE mandate
- how their application is related to preparing for and/or responding to existing and future pandemics and other health emergencies
- how their application is relevant to one of the CRPPHE Priority Research Areas listed above. Applications may address more than one Priority Research Area.
The award must be held in Canada.
Successful applicants are required to complete the How to integrate sex and gender considerations into research training by following one of the CIHR Institute of Gender and Health's three online training modules. Successful applicants must select and follow the appropriate training module that applies to their research area. Successful applicants will be required to submit the certificate of completion within one month of their award acceptance or prior to their award's effective start date (whichever comes first).
A final report on the work accomplished must be submitted within three (3) months of completion of the award. Successful applicants will receive a document outlining the requirements/format of the report.
Only one (1) trainee per research environment (under the same supervisor) will be eligible to receive funding.
Sex and Gender in Health Research – (DSG)
Summary
The CIHR Institute of Gender and Health (CIHR-IGH) will fund applications relevant to its mandate and research priorities as outlined in the Research Priority Plan, and that align with at least one of the following research areas:
Research Areas:
1. Advancing intersectionality in sex and gender science
2. Understanding sex and gender mechanisms and processes
3. Sex and gender science for health equity in priority communities
- For research area 3, priority communities include women, 2S/LGBTQI+, Black and/or Indigenous communities.
- All applications are strongly encouraged to integrate concepts of intersectionality, where applicable.

The Institute of Gender and Health will provide funding for three (3) awards.
This amount may increase if additional funding partners or internal collaborators decide to participate.

Specific RequirementsThis Priority Announcement will require the completion of a Relevance Form. In the Relevance Form, the applicant must clearly indicate which of the three (3) research areas listed above they are applying to, and
- Justify the relevance of their proposal to IGH's mandate and research priorities,
- Comment on the integration of intersectionality, if applicable,
- Comment on the relevance to 2S/LGBTQI+ and/or Black communities, if applicable.
- Applications that address Indigenous health and wellness issues and/or population groups experiencing health inequities must elaborate on the applicant's ability to engage meaningfully and in a culturally safe way with these communities.
This award may be held in Canada or abroad.
The CIHR-IGH team may contact funded recipients to request a plain language written summary of their research project. This could include key messages and/or findings, outcomes, next steps and if applicable, any knowledge mobilization activities.

Review Process and Evaluation
Relevance Review Process
The following criteria will be used in conducting the relevance review:
- Alignment of the objectives of the proposed activity with the specific objectives of the CIHR Institute, Initiative, Branch and/or partners offering funding through the Priority Announcement Funding Opportunity. To conduct relevance review, CIHR and Partners will have access to various information submitted by applicants (e.g. completed relevance form, project titles, summaries, full applications…etc.), provided that applicants have consented to the sharing of information in consideration for other funding opportunities as well as to the sharing of information to observers in completing their ResearchNet application.
Upon completion of peer review, CIHR will rank the applications that 1) are found to be relevant to the specific objectives of the research initiative and the research priority areas described under "CIHR Research Priority Areas"; and 2) are ranked within the CIHR fundable range but are not funded through the regular CIHR competition to which they were submitted. These applications will be funded from the top down in order of ranking as far as budgets will allow. Applications that receive a ranking below 3.5 will not be funded.
Applications that are not deemed to be relevant will be withdrawn from the Priority Announcement competitions, but will continue to be considered for funding through the Canada Graduate Research Scholarship – Doctoral (CGRS D): 2025-2026 funding opportunity.
Peer Review
Peer review committees will not be informed of applications submitted for funding through priority announcements.
