Summary

The United States and Mexico have initiated the joint review process for the USMCA. Discussions will focus on reducing regional dependence, strengthening rules of origin, and enhancing supply chain security. Negotiators are scheduled to hold their first meeting the week of March 16, 2026.

What changed

The U.S. Trade Representative and Mexico's Secretary of Economy have announced the commencement of bilateral discussions for the Joint Review of the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement (USMCA). This review aims to ensure the agreement's benefits primarily serve the member countries by focusing on reducing extra-regional imports, reinforcing rules of origin, and bolstering North American supply chain security. The first meeting of negotiators is slated for the week of March 16, 2026, with regular subsequent meetings planned.

This marks the beginning of a formal review process that could lead to adjustments in trade policies and regulations under the USMCA. Companies involved in trade between the US, Mexico, and Canada should monitor these discussions closely, as potential changes to rules of origin or supply chain requirements could impact operations. While no specific compliance deadlines are mentioned, the initiation of these discussions signals a period of potential regulatory evolution for North American trade.

What to do next

  1. Monitor discussions regarding USMCA review outcomes.
  2. Assess potential impacts of strengthened rules of origin on supply chains.
  3. Review import/export strategies in light of regional dependence reduction goals.
