Patent Application for Non-Terrestrial Network Positioning Resource Reuse
Summary
The USPTO has published a new patent application detailing a method for reusing positioning resources in non-terrestrial networks. The application, filed by inventors from various backgrounds, describes a user equipment's ability to obtain and utilize positioning resource pool information for enhanced navigation in satellite-based communication systems.
What changed
This document is a published patent application (US20260088952A1) from the USPTO, detailing a novel approach to positioning resource reuse within non-terrestrial networks (NTNs). The core innovation involves a user equipment (UE) obtaining specific positioning resource pool information, including indications of position-navigation-timing (PNT) cells and their associated positioning reference signal (PRS) resources. These resources are designed for NTN positioning transmitted by NTN anchors, with each PNT cell corresponding to geographical areas, serving cells, or transmission-reception points (TRPs).
As this is a patent application, it does not impose direct compliance obligations on regulated entities. However, it signals potential future technological developments in satellite communication and positioning systems. Companies involved in telecommunications, satellite technology, and navigation systems may find this application relevant for understanding emerging intellectual property and technological trends in the field. The filing date was September 20, 2024, with a publication date of March 26, 2026.

Abstract
In an aspect, a user equipment (UE) may obtain positioning resource pool information including an indication of a set of one or more position-navigation-timing (PNT) cells and a corresponding set of one or more positioning reference signal (PRS) resources associated with each PNT cell, wherein the set of one or more PRS resources correspond to non-terrestrial network (NTN) positioning resources transmitted by NTN anchors, and wherein each PNT cell of the set of one or more PNT cells corresponds to a geographical area, one or more serving cells, one or more transmission-reception points (TRPs), or a combination thereof. The UE may obtain NTN positioning resource measurements based on a set of one or more PRS resources corresponding to the PNT cell with which the UE is currently associated.
