In the Interest of G. C. - Child Dependency Case Remanded
Summary
The Court of Appeals of Georgia remanded a child dependency case, In the Interest of G. C., to the Juvenile Court of Dawson County. The remand is for the appointment of appellate counsel after the original counsel moved to withdraw and indicated a different attorney represented the mother, who was previously prohibited from representing the mother by the juvenile court.
What changed
The Court of Appeals of Georgia has remanded the case In the Interest of G. C., concerning child dependency, back to the Juvenile Court of Dawson County. This action stems from a dispute over legal representation for the mother. The appellate court noted that the juvenile court had previously prohibited Heather Daly from representing the mother, yet Daly was indicated as the mother's representative on appeal. The court also noted that the appointed appellate counsel had moved to withdraw.
This remand requires the juvenile court to address the issue of appellate representation. Once this is resolved, the juvenile court clerk is directed to resubmit the appeal. This procedural step is necessary to ensure proper legal representation for the mother before the appellate court can proceed with the case. The case involves the appointment of counsel and potential conflicts in representation within the child dependency system.
What to do next
- Review juvenile court order regarding representation of the mother.
- Ensure proper appointment of appellate counsel.
- Resubmit appeal to the Court of Appeals once appellate representation is clarified.

of the State of Georgia
ATLANTA,____________________
March 06, 2026
The Court of Appeals hereby passes the following order:
A26A1320. IN THE INTEREST OF G. C., children (mother).
The mother has appealed the trial court’s order of dependency in this case, and
the Juvenile Court of Dawson County appointed Lynn Akeley-Alderman and Kevin
Gough to represent the mother. The Juvenile Court also entered an order prohibiting
Heather Daly from representing the mother below. On appeal, Akeley-Alderman and
Gough have moved to withdraw and indicated that Heather Daly represents the
mother. Based on the juvenile court order finding that Daly could not represent the
mother, and based on the motions to withdraw by Akeley-Alderman and Gough, we
hereby REMAND this case to the Juvenile Court of Dawson County for appointment
of appellate counsel. Once the juvenile court has entered an order addressing the issue
of appellate representation, the juvenile court clerk is DIRECTED to resubmit the
appeal with this order and any additional relevant filings docketed after the instant
appeal was previously submitted.
