New York Executive Order Extending Disaster Emergency Due to Healthcare Staffing Shortages
Summary
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has extended the declaration of a disaster emergency due to healthcare staffing shortages caused by a nursing strike. The extension, through February 12, 2026, continues the terms and suspensions outlined in Executive Order 56 for Bronx, New York, and contiguous counties.
What changed
Governor Kathy Hochul of New York has issued Executive Order No. 56.7, extending the declaration of a disaster emergency in Bronx, New York, and contiguous counties. This extension is a direct response to severe healthcare staffing shortages resulting from a nursing personnel strike, which threatens the availability and delivery of critical care. The order continues the terms, conditions, and suspensions previously established in Executive Order 56.
This extension requires healthcare providers in the affected counties to continue operating under the conditions stipulated by the disaster emergency declaration until February 12, 2026. While the order aims to ensure continuity of care and patient safety, it explicitly states it is not intended to provide leverage in collective bargaining. Compliance with the continued suspensions and directives is mandatory for healthcare facilities within the specified geographic scope.
What to do next
- Ensure continued compliance with all directives and suspensions outlined in Executive Order 56 as extended by Executive Order 56.7.
- Monitor operational status and staffing levels to maintain continuity of care in Bronx, New York, and contiguous counties.
- Review internal policies to align with any specific requirements or waivers in effect during the extended disaster emergency period.
