The funding, from the Grade Crossing Protection Fund, will cover new automatic flashing light signals and gates, with BNSF Railway Company covering remaining costs and maintenance.

What changed

The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) has approved approximately $1 million in funding for safety upgrades at three highway-rail crossings in Carroll and Ogle counties, Illinois. This approval, stemming from a stipulated agreement, mandates the installation of new automatic flashing light signals and gates at the Oakville Road, Brookeville/Ogle Road, and W. Oregon Trail Road crossings. The Grade Crossing Protection Fund (GCPF) will cover 95% of the estimated cost, not exceeding $993,328, while BNSF Railway Company will be responsible for the remaining installation costs and all future operating and maintenance expenses.

This action represents a routine allocation of funds for infrastructure improvements aimed at enhancing public safety at rail crossings. All work is required to be completed within 18 months of the ICC's order. Regulated entities, specifically BNSF Railway Company, must ensure the timely completion of these safety installations and adhere to the maintenance responsibilities outlined in the agreement. No specific compliance deadline for external parties is mentioned beyond the 18-month completion window for the project itself.

What to do next

  1. Ensure completion of new automatic flashing light signals and gates within 18 months.
  2. Oversee BNSF Railway Company's responsibilities for installation, operation, and maintenance costs.
