NSLDS Information Collection Submission for OMB Review
Summary
The Department of Education published a notice announcing the submission of the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) information collection to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for review and approval under the Paperwork Reduction Act. The notice opens a 30-day public comment period ending May 7, 2026, during which stakeholders may submit feedback on the proposed information collection. The NSLDS is the central database for federal student loan information.
What changed
The Department of Education submitted the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) information collection to OMB for review under the Paperwork Reduction Act. The notice does not propose new regulatory requirements but rather requests public comments on an existing information collection associated with the NSLDS, which tracks federal student loan data including loan disbursements, repayments, deferments, and defaults. The collection affects institutions participating in federal student aid programs, loan servicers, and other entities required to report student loan data to NSLDS.
Institutions and loan servicers that submit data to NSLDS should review the notice and submit any comments on the information collection by May 7, 2026. The public may comment via Regulations.gov or mail on whether the information collection is necessary, the accuracy of the burden estimate, ways to minimize burden, and the need for the collection. This is a standard renewal process and does not impose new compliance obligations.
What to do next
- Review the NSLDS information collection notice and determine if your institution or organization has feedback on the data collection requirements
- Submit comments to ED/OMB by May 7, 2026 if you have concerns about the information collection burden or scope
- Verify your institution's current NSLDS reporting procedures align with the collection requirements under review
