Florida Bread Testing Finds Glyphosate in 6 of 8 Products
Summary
The Florida Department of Health released results from its Healthy Florida First initiative, finding glyphosate in six out of eight tested bread products from national brands. The initiative aims to increase transparency and accountability for food products available to Florida families.
What changed
The Florida Department of Health, under the Healthy Florida First initiative, has released findings from independent testing of bread products commonly sold in the state. The testing revealed that glyphosate, a widely used herbicide, was detected in six of the eight bread products sampled from five national brands. This follows previous testing of infant formula and candy products, which also identified concerning levels of heavy metals and pesticides.
While this is a non-binding notice and does not impose new regulatory requirements, the findings highlight potential exposure risks for consumers, particularly children, to chemical contaminants in staple foods. The initiative aims to provide consumers with information to make informed decisions and promote accountability among food manufacturers. Regulated entities, particularly food manufacturers and distributors operating in Florida, should be aware of these findings and consider their implications for product formulation and consumer communication.
What to do next
- Review the Florida Department of Health's bread testing results.
- Assess product formulations for the presence of glyphosate and other detected contaminants.
- Consider enhanced transparency and consumer communication regarding product ingredients and testing.

“As Governor, I have worked to make Florida the model for health freedom,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “I’m proud of First Lady Casey DeSantis’ leadership on Healthy Florida First. Today’s announcement about bread product testing, which follows the release of infant formula and candy test results, is another step toward a healthier future. We will continue working to arm Floridians with the information they need to make the best choices for their families’ well-being.”
Last month, Florida released infant formula testing results after DOH analyzed 24 infant formula products sold online and in stores across the state, reviewing samples from seven major brands for heavy metals and pesticides. The testing identified elevated levels of certain heavy metals compared to health-based screening benchmarks, including mercury, arsenic, cadmium, and lead.
Building on that work, DOH tested 46 candy products from 10 companies for heavy metals. Arsenic was detected in 28 of the products tested, prompting further evaluation of potential exposure risks, particularly for children. Those results were released to provide families with clear, accessible information and promote accountability for products widely consumed by Florida’s children.
Florida has now expanded its independent testing to bread. DOH tested eight bread products across five national brands commonly available in Florida grocery stores. Glyphosate, a widely used herbicide commonly applied in agricultural production to control weeds, was detected in six of the eight bread products tested. The results released today are intended to give families additional insight into everyday foods and support informed decision-making.
“The Healthy Florida First initiative is taking proactive steps to strengthen food safety standards nationwide,” said First Lady Casey DeSantis. “The results from the Florida Department of Health’s analysis of bread testing results show troubling levels of glyphosate. Consumers deserve to know what chemical contaminants are in their food so that they can make informed decisions.”
“Bread is a staple food for many Florida families, and they should be able to consume it without worrying about toxins,” said State Surgeon General Dr. Joseph A. Ladapo. “Our testing found high levels of glyphosate in some popular bread brands. Chronic exposure to glyphosate is linked to harmful gut microbiome changes, liver inflammation, and adverse neurologic effects. Florida is taking action through transparency, continued testing, and a clear focus on reducing exposure to protect families.”
The bread testing initiative, along with the previously released infant formula and candy testing results, is part of Florida’s broader Healthy Florida First effort, which focuses on clean and transparent food systems, accountability, and restoring trust in public health through evidence-based action.
