Summary

The California Board of Pharmacy issued a news roundup detailing changes to pharmacist authority regarding vaccine administration, effective January 1, 2026, due to Assembly Bill 1503. The update encourages pharmacists to transition to a standard of care practice model for immunizations for patients three years and older.

What changed

The California State Board of Pharmacy has issued a news roundup highlighting upcoming changes to pharmacist authority concerning vaccine administration, primarily driven by Assembly Bill 1503, which takes effect on January 1, 2026. This new legislation transitions the authority for pharmacists to independently initiate and administer vaccines for individuals aged three and older to a standard of care practice model, aligning with other healthcare practitioners. The Board also notes that Assembly Bill 144, effective September 17, 2025, provides pharmacists with independent authority to administer immunizations recommended by ACIP as of January 1, 2025, and includes provisions for Medi-Cal coverage.

Pharmacists in California should prepare for the shift to a standard of care model for immunizations for patients aged three and older by January 1, 2026. While current authority to administer immunizations to any person under a prescriber protocol remains until that date, the new legislation broadens independent authority. Regulated entities should review the specific provisions of AB 1503 and AB 144 to ensure compliance with the updated practice standards and reporting requirements.

What to do next

  1. Review Assembly Bill 1503 and Assembly Bill 144 regarding updated pharmacist vaccine administration authority.
  2. Prepare to transition to a standard of care practice model for immunizations for patients aged three and older by January 1, 2026.
  3. Ensure compliance with any new reporting or protocol requirements associated with the updated vaccine administration laws.

recommended by the Califo rnia Department of Public Health. This authority became effective on September 17, 2025, and provides separate and independent authority (complementing other current and forthcoming authorities) for pharmacists to administer vaccines.
