Summary

The Japan Patent Office released preliminary statistical data on filing applications for FY2025 (June-November 2025). Total applications increased 11.2% year-on-year to 505,144. Patent filings rose 11.6% to 308,272, while trademark applications decreased slightly to 160,036. International PCT patent applications increased 3.2% to 312,897.

What changed

The Japan Patent Office published preliminary filing statistics covering June through November 2025 (fiscal year 2025). Key figures show total applications at 505,144, representing an 11.2% increase from the prior year's 454,253. Patent filings reached 308,272 (up 11.6% from 276,289), utility model filings increased to 4,625 (up 9.4%), and design applications rose to 32,211 (up 10.8%). Trademark filings decreased to 160,036 from 144,673 (down 0.8%). International applications via PCT grew to 312,897 (up 3.2%).

This statistical release contains no new regulatory requirements or compliance obligations. Entities monitoring IP filing trends in Japan may use this data for competitive intelligence and strategic planning. No action is required as this is informational only.
