Helsinki, 27 February 2026 – The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has updated its annual statistics on evaluation progress. Between 2009 and 2025, it checked the compliance of more than 30 % of the substances registered before 2019 at volumes of at least 100 tonnes per year. Overall, ECHA has checked the compliance of 16 100 registrations, representing 23,5 % of all submitted dossiers and covering 2 380 substances. The checks aim to ensure that companies provide reliable hazard data when it is missing, helping to safeguard chemical safety in the European Union.

It has requested additional hazard data to clarify health and environmental concerns, including those affecting reproduction and causing genetic mutations. This helps that chemical safety data remains up to date, protecting people and the environment from potential harm.

In 2025, the Agency carried out 214 compliance checks, covering almost 1 200 registrations and addressing 196 individual substances. These checks focused on REACH registration dossiers with potential data gaps. As a result, ECHA sent 208 decisions to companies, requesting more data on the long-term effects of chemicals on people or the environment. ECHA also examined 108 testing proposals.

After requesting the missing information from companies, ECHA checks whether the provided information complies with REACH. In 2025, this evaluation was concluded for 241 substances. In about 70 % of the 241 cases, companies had provided the requested information to the Agency; the remaining 30 % were notified to Member States for enforcement. After having received the requested information, ECHA flagged more than 15 % of the cases to Member States authorities to consider further risk management.

Under the substance evaluation process, Member States authorities concluded evaluations for 268 substances between 2012 and 2025. For 137 substances, further regulation at EU level was needed, such as harmonised classification. 131 substances did not require further action.
