OPSN Engages NAICOM on NIIRA 2025 Implementation and Sectoral Insurance Products for Maritime and Petroleum

OPSN presented two priority tracks: maritime products for container and cargo-related losses, and petroleum products for retail distribution public liability and transit risks. NAICOM confirmed it retains authority to issue frameworks, guidelines, and premium determinations for compulsory insurance products under NIIRA 2025. Both parties agreed to establish a technical working group to develop implementation modalities.
NDPC Partners NELFund to Protect Personal Data of 1.3 Million Students
The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) and the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFund) announced a strategic partnership to protect the personal data of approximately 1.3 million student loan beneficiaries. NDPC National Commissioner Dr Vincent Olatunji met with NELFund CEO Mr Akintunde Sawyerr to discuss compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act) 2023. NDPC offered free induction training, Virtual Privacy Academy vouchers, and DPO certification for NELFund staff, and a working group was established to advance the partnership.
NDPC Kicks Off 2nd Edition of DPO Certification in Abuja and Lagos
The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has commenced the second edition of its Data Protection Officer (DPO) certification training programme in Abuja and Lagos. National Commissioner Dr. Vincent Olatunji delivered opening remarks, highlighting Nigeria's goal to become a global privacy hub and address the worldwide scarcity of qualified DPOs. Participants from the first edition are now actively working as DPOs, and current participants will receive internship opportunities upon completion.
NDPC Offers Specialized DPO Certification and Privacy Training to Federal Character Commission Staff
The Nigeria Data Protection Commission announced the offer of Data Protection Officer certification and privacy training to staff of the Federal Character Commission. The training would include DPO certification programmes and access to the Virtual Privacy Academy.
NDPC and INEC Form Joint Working Group for Voter Privacy
The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have inaugurated a joint working group to safeguard the personal data of approximately 94 million Nigerian voters. NDPC National Commissioner Dr Vincent Olatunji emphasised that INEC houses significant voter personal data and that creating protective measures will improve trust in the electoral body, particularly ahead of the 2027 elections. The working group is expected to sensitise stakeholders on data controller and processor responsibilities and promote responsible data processing by political parties, civil society organisations, and vendors.

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission's Head of Legal, Enforcement and Regulations Department, Babatunde Bamigboye, was elected as Rapporteur of UNCITRAL Working Group on Electronic Commerce at its 70th Session in New York. His nomination was put forward by the US delegation and seconded by Singapore. The Working Group deliberated on Draft Model Legislative Provisions on Contracts for the Provision of Data, aiming to foster stability in global data provision value chains.
