Abstract
An introducer assembly is provided that can install a drain as an outpatient procedure and corresponding method. The assembly includes an elongate introducer having a distal end with a blunt tip and an opposite proximal end enabling user manipulation. The elongate introducer includes a stylet and a sleeve, one of which forms the blunt tip. The sleeve has a canular wall defining a hollow interior and a stylet access opening therethrough at the sleeve proximal end region. The stylet is arranged as a sleeve insert having a handle laterally extending through the stylet access opening while within the sleeve, which can be slidably withdrawn from the sleeve at the distal end region while remaining portions of the elongate introducer are within a wound to be drained. The elongate introducer can include an embedded scalpel blade and retractable sheath for cutting wound entry and exit incisions when installing a drain.
